Every year Christchurch participates in helping to run the booths at the Oyster Festival. One of the booths that Christchurch runs is totally devoted to educating the people and the kids about our watershed. We teach the kids about the fish that live in the area and the role that they play in the watershed in a more interactive way. The reason that we want to teach the kids about this it to get them interested in the watershed and want to do more to preserve it for the people in the future. Due to natural and unnatural causes, the watershed has faced pollution and runoff over the years; we want to improve the health of the water and save the river and living things for future generations.
The booth is set up near the water front of Urbanna; we have a little tent with a fish tank, and nets for the kids or adults to catch. Once they catch a fish we teach them about it and let touch the fish. This is a very effective was for the kids to learn and have fun while doing so. We have the opportunity now where we can make a difference that others might not have in the future, and Christchurch wants us to take advantage of that opportunity by getting out and giving our knowledge to the people that the watershed affects. The Education booths teach kids what is needed for the Bay to be healthy. The booths teach the students who work at it to interact with the people outside of the school and learn social skills. I enjoyed teaching the kids about the fish in a fun, hands on way that they all seemed to enjoy. I learned about almost every important fish that was in the bay and that played a big role in the bays health. Not only is the booth help the environment but it shares our education with the younger kids that might not be able to learn or have the opportunity to learn what we offer to teach them. All of the workers, the teachers and kids, volunteer to work at the oyster festival and the booth cost nothing to be there, making the expense of educating beneficial to both the school and the kids learning.
