The Sustainability Mission of Christchurch School

In keeping with the mission of Christchurch School, it is our belief that sustainability is and will remain a part of the integral fabric of the school’s operations. We believe that through recycling, re-using and reducing our school products, we will be able to promote sustainability. We intend to improve the environment for both our school and the surrounding area by making the best use of our local resources, making decisions to improve our health, economy, society, and environment and by improving our campus through energy and water conservation, sustainable landscaping, building design and renovation, using local and organic food, and recycling. We strive to involve all members of the school community to achieve our goal of reducing our impact on the environment while educating ourselves in the process by means of equity, economy, environment, and education, equally important for everyone in the community.

Reduce, Reuse, and Put it in the Box

My Dorm project assigned to me by Mr. Smiley has gone pretty well. I had successful hall meetings and got good feedback from students about what they think of recycling and how to make it fun and more interesting so that people engage in it more. Due to my research and investigation on dorm, I found the main hall that has been throwing trash into the cans bin. We are now taking a further step into this project by ordering bin covers for the cans bin so that only cans will be able to go in them. From the hall meetings I held I knew that most halls were not doing a bad job when it came to recycling. The only hall struggling to recycle was 3rd Scott and not because they were not educated but because of their laziness. After weeks of hall meetings and new signs on hall, my Local Contemporary Environmental Issue class started to see some change in the amount of trash in the cans bin. They started to generate more cans and less trash every time they checked. I left this project alone for a little while to see if its change was constant.
I was given a new dorm project to undertake which counted as my exam. This project required me to put up 5 boxes on every hall; a box for laundry supplies, one for clothes, another for coat hangers, one for school supplies, and one for any reusable items. This project was to get all the unneeded and unwanted reusable items from students on every hall for two main reasons; to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill and to donate some of the reusable materials to the less fortunate people. This project is done every end of year at Christchurch School. As students start to pack up their stuff to take home, they are bound to find things that they do not need but can be reused again and instead of throwing it away. We collect them to avoid waste and so that we can be able to give to our community. This project also required me to make signs and hold hall meetings. In my hall meetings I had to explain why we were doing this and why it was important; I explained that most of the things that are taken to the landfill are reusable items that are just thrown away because they were not needed or wanted anymore even though there are people out there that need the things we throw away. It is safe to say that this project also went successfully.
Both of my Projects were sustainable and they related to the three E’s which are the economy, equity and the environment.

These two projects are sustainable projects because they both help save the environment we live in. Recycling and Reusing items not only save our environment but also save lives.
